Magical Realism By Tomek Setowski

Tomek Setowski is known worldwide as one of the most prominent representatives of the style called “Magical Realism”. Fairytale Characters, Underwater Worlds, Sky Cities, Beautiful Women, manifestations of his dreams form deep symbolism of Magical Realism.

Tomek began his artistic career after having graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Czestochowa, Poland in 1989.
Setowski is acclaimed one of the most original and gifted painters, who managed to create his own unique and recognizable style. His art aroused interest of the best galleries around the world.

Tomek Setowski was born in 1961 in Czestochowa, Poland, where he is still residing and where his main gallery called Museum of imagination is located.

In 1995 his paintings were included in a road show exhibition called “Polish Surrealists” which presented the best artists taking their ideas from this surrealism trend. Thanks to this event, Setowski was acclaimed one of the most original and gifted painters, who managed to create his own unique and recognizable style. His art aroused interest of the best Polish galleries, as well as foreign international art experts – exhibitions in France, Germany and Switzerland were very successful.

The breaking point in Setowski’s career was 1998, when Stricoff Fine Arts one of New York best galleries was looking for new, promising artist with original style of painting. From a group of several dozens of artists the Americans decided to bet on Setowski. It was the most important step for Tomek’s carrier overseas.

Since then Setowski has had his own stall and exhibits under his own signboard “The Museum of Imagination” on the New Yorker ARTEXPO. The presentations on the art fair turned out to be a success. Setowski’s works can be found in Stricoff and InterArt galleries in New York and have been lately shown on an individual exhibition in Las Vegas. Parallel to this, the exhibitions in Great Britain and Germany are being organized.

For many years Setowski has been put under the wide notion of surrealism.

Only recently it was decided that artists having a similar style fall under “magical realism” or “fantastic realism” and the artists themselves (what is often stressed by Setowski) are closer to Bosch than Salvadore Dali. There are not many representatives of this trend in the world, for creating such works deserves a faultless, almost masterly technique and immense imagination.
